Wednesday 14th – Overnight near College if wished. Nothing formally arranged.
Thursday 15th
9.00 Bus departs from Greenmount Agricultural College (BT61 8JH)
10.00 Arrive AFBI Loughgall
Visit (led by Dr Rodrigo Olave) to include research projects:- agroforestry system with pigs; ash silvopasture; see Wild Cherry silvopasture; and update on other related research in AFBI.
We will arrange a snack lunch option at Loughgall.
Leave Loughgall at 2.30 pm.
3.30 pm Arrive Greenmount farm to visit tree protection for silvopasture trial.
Return to the College (Coach) for 4.45.
5.00 AGM in Fulton 1 Classroom, Greenmount College.
7.30 Dinner in Greenmount College (very close to the AGM meeting room)
Friday 16th
9-12.15 Lecture programme in Fulton 1 Classroom. Tea/coffee break provided.
12.15 Lunch in Greenmount
13.00 Bus departs for Field visit.
Visit 3 sites.
The farm walks will be held on three farms.
- Broughgammon Farm in North Antrim to see silvopasture with rows of fruit tree and berry bushes, hedgerow restoration, wildflower meadows and many more abundant and plentiful habitats that flourish on the farm. Charlie Cole 50 Straid Rd, Ballycastle, BT54 6NP.
- The the farm of Réamaí & Sinéad Mathers in Cushendall who use silvopasture with Dexter cattle and Cactus Guards and a shelterbelt system of hedgerows to protect their farm from severe north-easterly winds as well as to improve the welfare of their animals. 115 Layde Rd, Cushendall, BT44 ONH
- The farm of Ian, Ben, and Thomas Gibson, Broughshane to look at the original (1991) sycamore silvopasture stand. The Gibsons have a mixed farm, suckler beef and sheep, in the Antrim Hills. There was 12ha of silvopasture planted on their farm in 1991(original NNE site), their cattle and sheep graze the silvopasture in rotation and they have found that it brings multiple benefits to their livestock and their farm environment. 115 Longmore Road, Broughshane BT43 7HR
Return to College 6.00 pm.
People ether disperse or can stay on at the College till Saturday..
