Join us this summer at Ballymaloe Cookery School, Organic Farm and Gardens for a 1-day introduction course on planting and caring for an orchard.

Taught by experienced commercial horticulturist Chris Troy, this course is a comprehensive introduction to planning and planting an apple orchard!

Chris has over 40 years practical experience of creating, and caring for, domestic orchards across Ireland. He’s an active member of Future Orchards in Glanmire and runs a number of courses on planting, grafting, pruning and fruit thinning on site each year. 

In his friendly, down to earth and practical teaching style Chris will introduce you to the basics of planning, planting and caring for an orchard be it for 3 or 30 trees! You’ll also have an opportunity to taste proper homegrown and home-juiced apple juice and other products from Chris’ apple harvest.

      • How to grow apples organically
      • How to plan your orchard – from soil preparation to harvesting
      • How to plant an apple tree
      • Orchard care and maintenance (pruning, pest control, disease prevention)
      • How to store apples through the winter

      Course Elements: 

      • Indoor and Outdoor Classroom time
      • A practical demonstration on how to site a orchard as well as planting the trees and how to place the stake correctly
      • A visit to our orchard
