NOTS are delighted to be facilitating a 2-day Level 2 / intermediate course in Syntropic Agroforestry from March 15th – 16th, 2023.

The course will be led by Felipe Amato and Davi Leon and will focus on how to manage a Syntropic system over time. Please note that the course is available to those who have completed the Introduction course. NOTS are providing a significant funding discount for the course.

  • Dates: March 15th – 16th, 2023
  • Times: 9.00am – 5.00pm each day
  • Cost: €175 when you sign up through NOTS (a discount on the full course price of €250) This includes lunch every day (most of it produced at the farm) and tea breaks
  • Venue: Classroom sessions in Ashford Heritage Centre, practical sessions in Hazel & Davi’s Wicklow Farm, Ashford Co. Wicklow

This training will enable those who already have the theoretical and practical basis of Syntropic Agriculture to understand how to interact with the plantation over time in order to move through the  succession in the desired direction.

Day 1: Theoretical Background & Selective Weeding:

  • Theoretical review of the introductory course on syntropic agroforestry
  • how to achieve a positive energy balance in agriculture
  • Review of the basic principles of syntropic agroforestry
  • How to accompany natural succession through selective weeding
  • Plant densities and functions of each plant
  • Selective weeding and creation of fertility to advance succession
  • Organization of organic matter as a tool for succession
  • Inter-row management
  • Selective weeding and pruning of spontaneous plants
  • Organization of organic matter over the soil

Day 2: Tree Density Management

  • How to manage the density of species in a multi-story agroforestry plantation
  • How different tree species (fruit trees, biomass trees) express their potential through succession
  • Disturbance as a tool to create fertility in the system
  • Different types of pruning
  • Pruning of biomass species and fruit trees and organization of organic matter in the soil.
