Organic Egg Production

This is a 1 day course on setting up an organic egg unit on your farm covering housing, feed, breeds etc. Course will take place in the Spring with the exact dates to be decided in the near future.

Course Content:

  • Expected egg numbers, feed usage, saleable eggs
  • Point-of-lay pullets – breed & source, body-weight, disposal of end-of-lay hens
  • Housing, equipment and lighting
  • Grazing and stocking density
  • Disease and behavioural problems
  • Fixed and variable costs; record keeping
  • Organic Regulations and Restrictions

Learning Outcomes

You will learn the theory behind organic egg production and the challenges and opportunities of small scale production. You will gain an understanding of breeds, housing and equipment by visiting actual units.
